Have people actually tried turning left onto a freeway from the entrance ramp, so much so that it requires a sign? Not sure about other states but these are all over Michigan entrance ramps.

The dashcams testify... yes it’s been done, but I somehow doubt that the sign will really help at that point.

Even if they have, I don't get the sign. If they're that kind of idiot, a sign isn't going to help...

I see this on 696 all the time. Yes they cut over early and just f up traffic. Not to mention the people that won’t let you merge in.

it just means some idiot tried to do a u-turn in oncoming traffic somewhere. Just like the “caution hot” on a cup of coffee.

A sign is “we have to do something”

I think a “No u-turn” sign would make my brain hurt less. A left turn just puts me into a Jersey barrier.

I guess it’s to stop people merging too early and no offence to our U.S. cousins but we’ve all seen videos of people doing stuff and when it goes Pete Tong blaming it on others siting that was no sign telling them not to do it.

Never underestimate the power of idiots.
I’d guess this is a liability thing after someone did just that.

Ah yes, “doing something”. That nebulous oft-striven never-reached goal, because if we just Do Something it will All Be Okay. Many somethings later...

But if you’re going to turn left, you’d be looking left, yes? Then you wouldn’t see the sign! But maybe if you’re planning a left turn onto such an obvious merge situation, you’re just not the type to look before turning anyway. AH!

Just a few miles further east is the Mound interchange. I hate how the entrance ramp there has two lanes, the left of which DROPS as soon as it meets the freeway. Once the solid white line ends, the left lane IMMEDIATELY starts to narrow, indicating that the lane no longer exists and any cars in it must merge NOW. There is no room for adjustments like speed matching. It just dumps you onto the freeway. “Good luck everybody else!”
And if you’re in the right ramp lane at that moment, you’re going to have to merge left very soon if you don’t want to exit right away.

This is also a standard thing in France. No left turn sign on the onramp and no right turn sign on the carriageway. Sorry for the google street view screen cap...
Also Cédez Le Passage...

In my town, we’ve had people turning onto the railroad tracks thinking that they’re turning to the on-ramp for State Route 8 northbound.
The city finally put a sign up attempting to get people to not turn onto the tracks...because “we HAVE to do something”. Since the sign was put up, someone has already driven onto the tracks again.
What can you do? You can’t fix dumb.

Is this a lane-keeping assistant technique of sorts?
People do all kinds of weird driving. I’ve seen that happen in Germany, I swear …
